What is the reality of staff development?

There is no ability for teachers have time to reflect and take action on staff development activities.

Does not support teachers as self-learners

Most staff feel staff development is imposed and this provides disheartened teachers.

What are the most important features to keep in mind when designing professional development offerings for teachers?
(andragogy - adult learning strategies, heutagogy- self determined learning )

Teachers need to know why they need to learn this
The learners self concept should be considered
Prior experience of the learner
Readiness to learn (will this help the teacher's job to be better)
Orientation of learning ????
Motivation to learn - differentiate and set the tone
How well does it fit with what we are already doing?
Give teachers time to practice the skill and then share their experience with others, then give them time to revamp their activity.
Rarely is time given for content knowledge and sharing
Why, where are you doing the staff development

Heutagogy

a //learning theory// based on concept of self determined learning fostering independence in adult learning. It is a learner centered theory of learning emphasizing that adults learn when they are ready. It assumes that people have the ability to learn continuously throughout life and in real time. This is accomplished through various interactions with one's environment. (http://www.joyfuljubilantlearning.com/joyful_jubilant_learning/2007/11/heutagogy---wor.html)
